BOCRA
Equipment certification
Communications equipment sold, imported, or operated in Botswana must be type-approved by BOCRA. Unapproved devices that cause harmful interference may be seized and the owner penalised.
Type approval is a mandatory certification process under Section 84 of the Communications Regulatory Authority Act (CRA Act). It confirms that a model of radio communications equipment complies with Botswana's technical standards for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), radio frequency (RF) emissions, and safety — and is in conformity with the Botswana frequency spectrum allocation plan as an ITU Region 1 member state.
The requirement applies to all devices that transmit or receive radio signals, including mobile phones, routers, satellite terminals, two-way radios, and IoT devices.
Complete the Type Approval Application Form (TA-01) and attach technical specifications, test reports, and FCC/CE/ETSI certificates where applicable.
BOCRA engineers review the submission against Botswana spectrum management requirements and applicable standards (e.g., SADC harmonised standards).
Devices may be referred for RF emission testing at an accredited laboratory. BOCRA will notify you within 10 working days of receipt.
Approved devices receive a BOCRA Type Approval Certificate valid for three (3) years and are listed in the public Type Approval Register.
